Glossy, green, lobed foliage and sprays of small, fragrant, yellow blooms on slender branches in spring. Radiant scarlet-red fall foliage and samaras. Prefers acidic, well-drained soil. Adaptable, extremely hardy and drought tolerant once established. Prune only in full-leaf as needed.

Laceleaf, palm-shaped and scarlet foliage matures to red-purple. Cascading branches form an elegant mound. Holds colour better than other A. palmatum through growing season. Protect from extreme heat and cold. Prefers an acidic, moist, well-drained soil.

Tamukeyama Japanese Cutleaf Maple
Acer palm. 'Tamukeyama'

New cutleaf foliage turns dark purple-red, then fiery scarlet in fall. Weeping specimen with cascading branches requires acidic, moist, well-drained soil. Tolerates heat, humidity and rabbit-browse. Foliage may scorch in full sun. Prune only in full leaf.

Mountain Alder
Alnus incana tenuifolia

Native to western Canada. Large shrub with thick oval foliage and thin, smooth, grey-green bark. Male plants have 3-4 long catkins. Suitable for bogs and stream banks. Aboriginal people used stems for making bows and snowshoes.
