Prairie Horizon® Man. Alder

Fast growing drought tolerant tree with dark green foliage and smooth gray bark. Attractive purple catkins followed by clusters of cone-like seed cases in spring. Bright yellow fall colour. Prefers a moist, well-drained soil. Prune in late winter or early spring.

Native to western Canada. Large shrub with thick oval foliage and thin, smooth, grey-green bark. Male plants have 3-4 long catkins. Suitable for bogs and stream banks. Aboriginal people used stems for making bows and snowshoes.

Native to cooler North American climates. Coarse, finely toothed, oval green foliage and inconspicuous yellow-green to brown blooms in spring, followed by red catkins. Tolerates dry and rocky soils; thrives in wet soils. Nitrogen-fixing reclamation plant.
